A penetration test is only as useful as its scope and what you do afterwards.
Before the test
- Define the goal: compliance evidence, a release gate, or a real attacker simulation each need different approaches.
- Scope the crown jewels first, not just whatever is easy to list.
- Agree rules of engagement: testing windows, contacts and what is out of bounds.
- Stage a realistic environment with representative data and accounts.
After the test
- Triage findings by business impact, not just severity score.
- Assign owners and dates the same week.
- Request a retest to confirm fixes.
- Feed lessons back into design and code review.
Regular, focused tests beat a single annual big-bang exercise.
